How to Copy Chrome Extensions Between Profiles or Accounts

To copy Chrome extensions from one profile to another, first check which Google account each profile uses. Profiles on the same account get the extensions through sync once you sign in. Profiles on different accounts need each extension reinstalled from the Chrome Web Store.

Below, you set up a second profile and turn on sync for one shared account. Then you rebuild the list by hand for two different accounts. The last part covers what never carries over.

How Chrome Sync Handles Extensions

Chrome Sync saves your extensions, bookmarks, passwords and settings to your Google Account once you sign in to Chrome. Any device or profile signed in with that same account gets them back. A profile signed in with a different account sees none of them, because sync never crosses accounts.

Moving to a new computer without sync means rebuilding the browser from scratch. Turn sync on before you make the switch and not after. Once sync is on, a Chrome bookmark manager can also sort those saved links into folders or boards.

Chrome then saves your extensions, bookmarks and settings to your Google Account. You reach them from any device you sign in on.

Turn sync off and everything already on the device stays put. What stops is the saving. Any change you make after that point lives only on that machine, and your other devices never see it.

There is no direct way to import Chrome extensions from another Google account. Between two accounts you reinstall each one from the Chrome Web Store.

Set Up a Second Chrome Profile

A second Chrome profile gives another account its own extensions, bookmarks and history on the same computer. You add one from the profile icon at the top right of Chrome. Then you sign in with a Google Account and choose what Chrome saves to it.

• Open your Google Chrome browser and look at the top-right corner of the window.
• Then click on the current user icon. It might appear with your name, email, or an icon saying Sign in.
• In the menu that opens, select Add Chrome profile.
• Choose a name, photo and color scheme for the new profile.
• Sign in with the Google Account whose extensions you want in this profile. Chrome then brings in the extensions, bookmarks and settings saved to that account.

2. Enable Sync on Both Profiles

Sync starts only after you sign in to Chrome in that profile. Each profile also keeps its own list of what it saves. Check that list in both profiles.

• Open your Chrome browser and simply click on the three dots in the top-right corner of your Chrome Window.
• From there, click on Settings.
• Under You and Google, select your account name. If Chrome asks you to sign in, do that first.
• Open Choose what to save in your Google Account.
• Make sure extensions are included in that list. Repeat these steps in the other profile.

How to Import Chrome Extensions from Another Google Account

You cannot import Chrome extensions straight from another Google account, because sync only shares data inside one account. That leaves two options. Sign in with the account that holds the extensions, or reinstall each extension from the Chrome Web Store in the new account.

Pick the route that matches your setup:

1. Same account: Sign in to Chrome with that account in the new profile or on the new device. Chrome adds the saved extensions on its own after sign-in.
2. Different accounts: List the extensions in the old profile on chrome://extensions. Reinstall each one from the Chrome Web Store while signed in to the new account.

How to Copy Chrome Extensions from One Profile to Another

To copy Chrome extensions from one profile to another, check which Google account each profile uses. Profiles on the same account share extensions through sync once you sign in. Profiles on different accounts need each extension reinstalled from the Chrome Web Store, and Chrome has no button that does it for you.

If both profiles use the same Google account

Sign in to Chrome with that account in the second profile. Then open Settings > You and Google, select your account name and check that extensions are saved to the account.

If the profiles use different Google accounts

You rebuild the list by hand. It takes about five minutes:

1. Open chrome://extensions in the profile you are copying from.
2. Turn on Developer mode in the top right so each extension shows its ID.
3. Write down the name and ID of every extension you want to keep. A screenshot of the page also works.
4. Switch to the other profile and open the Chrome Web Store.
5. Search each name and install it. Pinned toolbar order does not carry across. Set that again.

What does not carry over: extension settings, saved logins inside an extension and any local data it stored. Those live in the profile folder and not in your Google account. Check each extension for its own export or backup option before you switch.

Copying the Extensions folder out of the Chrome user data directory works on paper. In practice Chrome often disables the pasted extensions on next launch, because their keys do not match the new profile. Reinstalling from the store is slower to start and faster to finish.
